ENAntanas Tamošaitis is one of the most outstanding figures of the Lithuanian culture of the 20th century. From the very start he became famous as a collector and popularizer of Lithuanian folk art as well as a researcher into Lithuanian national costumes. In the first half of the 20th century, he was the first to have described and classified the national costumes, typical of various districts of Lithuania. In the years of Lithuanian Independence, he and his wife Anastazija Tamošaitienė were the only artists who were preoccupied with the creation of professional textiles. Up to the present time, Lithuanian art researchers have tried to portray Tamošai tis mostly as a collector of folk art, and as a specialist in that form of art as well as in national costumes. His work as a painter, especially the work belonging to the emig ration period, tended to be overlooked. The emigre press, on the other hand, gave preference to his creative work in exile. That is why this book should be regarded as an attempt to cover a very long and complex road of Tamošaitis' life and creation, paying equal attention to all the periods of the artist's life and of his activity.
