ENThe article discusses the state of the Orthodox Church educational system in the Great Duchy of Lithuania in the late 16th century. At the time, the Catholic educational system was represented by the Kraków Academy, the Zamojski Academy and numerous Jesuit colleges. The Protestant educational system, on the other hand, had a well-developed network of secondary schools (gymnasiums). The Orthodox believers could send their children either to non-Orthodox municipal schools or to Orthodox schools established at monasteries or parishes. However, the standard of teaching in monastic and parochial schools was low. The article addresses the issue of forming a new type of Orthodox school — brotherhoods’ schools — and informs about the west-European roots of brotherhood education in its Slavic-Greek form.
