Summary / Abstract:

[...]. ENArchitect Steponas Stulginskis (1908-1995) is a very superior person in the sky of Lithuanian architecture of the XX C. Buildings meeting the international style requirements were developed by the architect in the Lithuanian province, whereas in creation he aimed at the consistency of content and form. A philosopher and follower of Roerich, sentenced and exiled for his attitudes, having never lost creativity and spiritual strength. After Architecture Studies at Technical University in Prague (1928-1933), Steponas Stulginskis remained a convinced functionalist and modernist. Being an engineer of Telšiai region (1934-1937), he worked out the projects of Alka (Shrine) Museum, schools, gymnasiums, cinemas and synagogues. In Telšiai, the buildings of M. Valančius Gymnasium and Alka Museum became the harbingers of European Modernism in the Lithuanian province. The architect worked out and realised a few urbanistic projects: replanned the centre of Luokė borough after a fire (1934); designed a churchyard of Plungė Church and circuit hereof (1935-1938); worked out the projects for planning and building-up of Varniai (1942, 1947), Tverai and Žarėnai (1945). Due to his high-minded attitude towards work and some disputes (with the Curia in Telšiai and Parish Committee in Plungė), the architect left Telšiai. In autumn of 1938, he was appointed an engineer of Šiauliai region. Since 1940, Steponas Stulginskis lived and worked in Kaunas (head of the department, dean at the university, chief architect of the city, chairman of the Architects' Union). Due to participation in activities of the Roerich Society, the architect was arrested in exiled in the year 1949.After return from exile, he worked in the field of planning of regions, cities and towns, and settlements. In his theoretical works, Steponas Stulginskis pronounced for design of microdistricts, which was the novelty in postwar Lithuania. In the last years of his life (S. Stulginskis deceased on 17th March, 1995), the architect wrote a few articles that introduced his approach to Lithuanian history, successes and failures of the state, responsibility of each citizen, mistakes of the country's past through the prism of the Living Ethics philosophy.
