ENThe publication gives the overview of the history of book development in Šiauliai: it deals with the evolution of the book and the press, as well as the press-related institutions in Šiauliai and its surrounding areas, which now form Šiauliai district. There are descriptions about the regions printers and printing houses, bookbinders and their shops, bookmakers and bookstores, book lovers and collectors, more prominent authors and publishers, book companies and publishers of various newspapers, magazines and other printed publications, and the best known publications. It also introduces the history of personal, private and public libraries and reading rooms and book marks. We consider this to be the first broadest historical review from the 16th century to the present day about the development of the authors, publishers, printers, bookbinders, bookstores, press and books stands and libraries in Šiauliai city and the district. These areas have been studied by other authors so far, but only fragmentarily, in separate articles. This publication, in the form of a reference book, using a chronological sequence, including numerous statistics, tells about the most famous authors, book publishers, publishing companies, publishing houses, their books and brochures, single and periodical publications. The book also describes the prominent press workers in the region (printers, bookbinders), book distributors (bookmakers, books sellers, bookstores) and their keepers (librarians, bibliophiles, collectors and their collections).Book ownership marks (ex-libris, stamps and others) that were used in the history of Šiauliai book development are reviewed as a separate and distinctive genre of the book The book provides a plethora of knowledge and facts about the development of books, reading and press, their institutions, and explores the possible future and significance of paper and electronic books as a cultural and educational phenomenon for future generations. This reference book is richly illustrated with photographs, various book markers and book marks.
