Summary / Abstract:

ENEvery person works hard for 11 months not only because of material benefits, but also because she or he is waiting for the twelfth, the month of holiday leisure. It is the time when a person is not an engineer, a builder, a doctor, a company director or a secretary anymore, but simply John or Marry. It is when there is enough time to recover physical and spiritual powers in a pleasant and healthy way. In other words, there is enough time for recreation. A person can choose where to go, when and with whom. However, at the same time, she or he is always surrounded by environment: natural and cultural (including the architecture of recreation buildings and landscape architecture). The physical and aesthetic quality of this environment is influential while resting and travelling. More than 40 years ago, the school of planning was established in Lithuania. Since then, it has been developing as a solid school that carries out research in complex recreation architecture (especially that of townscape and recreation landscape) and is based on them. Its main centre was the Lithuanian Construction and Architecture Scientific Research Institute (LCASRI) in Kaunas. Graduates of this recreation architecture centre and their colleagues are now spread in universities of Kaunas, Vilnius and Klaipėda or companies specialising in architectural planning. In addition, the author of this book was the director of a specialized department at LCASRI and an organizer or co-worker in many of its activities. Thus, the book summarizes the author's experience acquired during these activities: presentations of these activities at international conferences and congresses, various ideas and realization of them in certain resorts, tourism zones and systems, and national parks in Lithuania by supplementing them with the newest results and objectives. In the first section called "What is what", a discussion on issues of special terminology and creative orientation of architectural work is presented and generalized. Responsibility for new architectural content and methodological and creative aims are emphasised here. To be more precise, architecture is not thought to be the "art of construction" anymore, but rather the art and science to form human environment. As a result, suggestions for optimization of architect training are given. As far as optimization itself is concerned, a broader evaluation scale of the quality of architecture is presented. A new framework of recreation zones and lines is suggested for the structure of spatial planning. [...] The second part of the book is called "Recreational infrastructure". Its sub-section "Spatial structure of recreation and tourism region or area" presents material of certain research and projects that involve a broader spectrum of territories - from the creation of a recreation element system of Eastern Baltic states to systematic research and projects on recreation and tourism in Lithuania and its separate zones. Special attention is paid to the Lithuanian seaside zone by emphasising its interesting diversity, evaluation of this diversity and a need to preserve it when seeking to expand and optimize recreational and tourism infrastructure there. [...] The third section is called "Architecture of recreation and tourism buildings". It defines architectural and social specificity of recreation buildings (hotels, rest-houses, tourist bases, etc.), and presents the typology of their architectural composition by taking into consideration not only Lithuanian but also worldwide experience. Special attention is dedicated to the relationship between recreation architecture and recreation natural environment in sub-section "Recreation architecture and recreation natural environment". [...].The fourth section is "Landscape architecture and recreational", in which landscape protection and management problems in recreation zones (including cities) are discussed. Publications and conference papers are presented in order to compare problems in Lithuania with the tendencies and practice in foreign countries. Besides, the aesthetic potential of Lithuanian landscape and its relation to recreation interest zones is evaluated. It shows that there are zones in which the official boundaries of protected landscape are set by evaluating their aesthetic quality insufficiently. In addition to this, the newest architectural composition tendencies of cities and resort squares are presented. The problem of tourism expansion and landscape protection in new locations of international tourism and architect responsibility are analysed as well. A modern tendency to increase the amount of "green" and "blue" spaces in contemporary cities is mentioned, too. The fifth section of the book contains fragments of separate cultural and recreation aspects. An architectural analysis of three world expositions (as places for leisure visits), EXPO, and their tendencies are presented, as well as Lithuanian places of architecture and variation in its expression in the directions of "east-west" and "north-south", etc. The architecture of "EXPO 1988" (in Osaka, Japan), whose slogan was "Progress and harmony of mankind," is analysed in greater detail. The author created the Lithuanian exhibition for EXPO and later worked in the exposition. The words "Progress and harmony of mankind" suit the end of this book well. [From the publication]
