Summary / Abstract:

ENAt present more than half of married couples get divorced in Lithuania. In case of family divorce or death of one spouse, the rest often make new families and bring their children from the first marriage into it. That is how mother's husband but not father, fathers wife, but not mother, appear in families. Children have no choice but to adjust, and adults need to show more maturity and understanding in a new family. Such new families face problems both inside the social community and outside it. Second marriage either exacerbates exciting problems or brings them up. Families raising teenagers face most problems. Research problem: Peculiarities of stepsons / stepdaughter's adaptation in a new family. Object of research: Stepson's / stepdaughter's adaptation in a new family. Aim: Study peculiarities of stepson's / stepdaughter's adaptation in a new family. Goals: 1. Reveal peculiarities of communication between members of a new family over the period of adaptation; 2. Identify stepsons' / stepdaughters' feelings over the period of adaptation. 3. Study changes in stepsons' / stepdaughters' behaviour; Contingent of research. Children, who had to live with a stepfather / stepmother at the age of 12-14. Methods of research: analysis of scientific literature, half-standardized interview. Conclusions: Research revealed that stepfather's / stepmother's communication with his / her stepson / stepdaughter during the period of adaptation has a big impact on their further relationship and interaction. During the period of adaptation the strategy of overcoming emotion-oriented difficulties is faced. Basic feelings experienced by teenagers during the period of adaptation are anger, embarrassment, hopelessness, guilt. Teenagers express their unhappiness about current situation by their changed behaviour. They lie, disobey, demonstrate their roughness in order to be accepted and become independent. Stealing, fighting, running away from home, truancy are related to the feelings of being unwanted and lonely. Fathers / mothers and stepfathers / stepmothers should pay more attention to teenage stepsons / stepdaughters, establish certain rules and follow them, and they should not distinguish between their and partners children.
