Summary / Abstract:

ENThe children of preschool age feature a natural need to move and work. Physical activity is a factor in child's growth, maturation, personality development and health promotion. Movement is especially important in the pre-school age, later children's activity is focused on academic learning, less time is left for physical activity ("FA") (Sigmund, Sigmundová, Ansari, 2009, p. 377). Recently, more attention has been focused on children's FA promotion, which includes parents. Parental support for children by encouraging them, participation in sport activities with child and active behavioural modelling positively affects children's FA (O'Connor et al., 2009, p. 141). The problem of the research: the promotion of physical activity of pre-school children in the family. The aim was to find out what are the peculiarities of promoting the physical activity of pre-school children in Lithuanian and Portuguese families? The object of the study: the promotion of physical activity of pre-school age children in Lithuanian and Portuguese families. The aim of the study: to analyse the opinions of Lithuanian and Portuguese parents on the peculiarities of the promotion of pre-school children's physical activity in the family. The organization and methodology of the research. A quantitative study was selected for the purpose of the study - a questionnaire survey of parents. The survey was conducted in the October - December of 2016. In the study participated 100 parents of the children attending the Flores island Y and Z pre-school institutions in Portugal (the Azores) and 100 parents of the children attending the V, W and X pre-school institutions in Klaipėda district, Lithuania. The ratio between female and male participants involved in the study is similar: the majority was women (83.0% in Lithuania and 66.0% in Portugal) and the minority - men (17% in Lithuania and 34.0% in Portugal). The ratio between the participants in the study by the gender of their children was very similar: more than half of the families (59.0% in Lithuania and 55.0% in Portugal) have been raising boys and slightly less than half (41.0% in Lithuania and 45.0% in Portugal) have been raising girls. The study revealed that more than half of the Lithuanian and Portugal parents claim to be engaged in active physical activity. The parents in Lithuania more often spend their leisure time on weekdays with children than those in Portugal. The families in Portugal, who were more actively engaged in leisure time on weekdays, were less likely to spend their free time on weekends. The results of the survey have shown that more than half of the parents both in Lithuania and Portugal consider their families as physically active. Parents who viewed their family as physically active were more often encouraging their children's FA by their own example. More than half of the parents in Lithuania and most of those in Portugal believe they were encouraging children to be physically active under their own example. The Portuguese parents are more active in terms of movement of children, whereas, at the same time, the parents in Lithuania take a neutral position on this issue. The parents who viewed their family as physically active tended to take an active position in terms of children learning to move. The parents in Portugal appreciate the outdoor and home environment more favourably than those in Lithuania. The parents who considered home space as an appropriate for child's FA also viewed the outdoor area as having a positive effect on children's FA. [From the publication]
