Summary / Abstract:

ENCareer development, employment and successful integration into a labour market are the main issues which taking bigger importance in the higher education performance. Higher institutions’ quality assurance system pays a special attention not only to the high school students, but to graduates as well. Students must be provided with high quality studies, which comply with current labour market needs. It is very important to graduates successfully integrate into the labour market and become competitive in their area of expertise; also they have to enjoy a successful professional career, establish own business or just like the job. Surveys are carried out regularly in Vilniaus kolegija/University of Applied Sciences (hereinafter –VK), Faculty of Economics in order to find out students potential after graduating and how successful they are about integrating into the labour market. According to the situation, it can be stated, that to find a job for a young specialist straight after the graduation is a relatively complex – Labour Exchange only indicates the average possibilities for employment, meanwhile the expectations and requirements of the employers are quite high. Graduate has to master professional and common competencies, be able to apply the knowledge, find and collect new information in a changeable business environment.Study results showed that about 55 % VK graduates who are about completing studies already had a potential place of employment. Within a short period after the studies (fewer than half a year), about 43% of graduates had been employed already. Former students argue that knowledge acquired during studies is very useful, particularly practical skills and the importance of professional practice is crucial because it helped them to establish the workplace even during the final practice. VK has to strengthen further relations with the social partners, since it is a guaranty of the quality of study programme. Faculty stakeholders are often the very first employers to graduates. It is important to encourage and motivate students to pursue not only their professional knowledge and skills, but also educate their common, communicative and organisational abilities. Changeable business environment poses significant challenges not only for the new specialists but also for the institutions of education. [From the publication]
