ENSaulius Tomas Kondrotas (born 1953 in Kaunas) - prose writer and scriptwriter, who had his debut in 1977, is considered as one of the most important authors of Lithuanian magical realism. This article covers his first novel "Žalčio žvilgsnis", which tells the story of a family in Lithuania at the end of the 19th century. S. T. Kondrotas defined this work as 'gates to freedom'. The goal of this article is to show what can illustrate broadly defined liberation of the writer and what role in this context played his writing strategies. This work presents main conclusions from text analysis and interpretation and seeks an answer to the question what impact on novel reception had author’s choice of using magical realism.
