Summary / Abstract:

ENFor many reasons (the long-standing Soviet occupation, etc.), the traditional villages of Lithuania were not sufficiently investigated. The author analyzes the historical development of the Daujėnai district villages in accordance with the developed theoretical and methodological rules of the rural research (as a separate scientific discipline). Due to natural and other reasons, this territory was long peripheral and sparsely populated. The known older villages were established on the banks of rivers, but elsewhere forests and marshes stretched out. After the abolition of serfdom in the Russian Empire (1861), land that had not been used until then was reclaimed; many new villages and farmsteads were established. After the land reform carried out in Lithuania in 1920, the villages were divided into farmsteads. During the Soviet occupation, a new agricultural policy was implemented: small villages were liquidated, and the development of large settlements was promoted. Radical reforms have led to the decay of many old villages and farmsteads, the abandonment of the territory and the fundamental transformations of the village network. [From the publication]
