ENThe article introduces the oldest forms of puppetry still seen today in Samogitia: during Easter the moving wooden sculptures of the Roman soldiers who watched over Christ’s tomb (called "Žalnieriai"), homemade box puppet theatres ("Šėpa") and finger puppets, all of which were used in celebrations and gatherings of people. In rural areas of Samogitia, there is still information about puppet theatres that have thrived for centuries, which can be studied as an example of our ethnic cultural heritage. The first professional puppet theatre in Lithuania was founded in Kaunas in 1936 by the artist Stašys Ušinskas, but puppets, like masks, in rituals, celebrations, or in the home environment, were used by people for a long timeprior.
