ENTo attain a thorough learners' punctuation rules knowledge and ability to apply them five advanced dictations were written by 9-12 formers. In all 500 test-papers were written. The main finding is that the learners promoted to senior forms acquire a better knowledge of punctuation and skills of application but the progress is still insignificant. The research proved that mostly mistakes are made in summary, explanation and precise definition assignments. Sometimes mistakes are made in assignments for definite compound, complex sentence parts but generally their punctuation mistakes dominate because sentences of this kind are widely used in speech. The main reasons for punctuation mistakes are as follows: incomprehensible sentence structure, it is not clear what items make up a sentence, incomprehensible their boundaries and interrelation, unknown punctuation rules and pupils' reliance on intuition only. The main punctuation themes are presented to 8-10 forms which is in fact too short a time for pupils to learn such a complex subject. [From the publication]
