ENThe Second World War led to fundamental political, territorial, economic, social and cultural changes in Europe. Intensive forced migration affected tens of millions of people in Europe, Lithuanian citizens among them. The article discusses the topic of forced migration from Lithuania during the war and postwar years (deportation to the East, forced/voluntary migration to the West, migration within Lithuania), with a specific focus on the migration to the West. Drawing on historiography and sources (primarily diaries and memoirs), the circumstances and motives for leaving one’s native country, identity and fate perception questions, as well as the issue of search for the meaning of life are analysed.
