ENThe article deals with the loanwords used by speakers of the Punskas and Seinai dialects which are classified as the western part of Southern Aukštaitija. Relaying on written and audio sources, the author tries to describe the loanwords used by Lithuanians living in Poland, as well as to show the similarities and differences between the Punskas and Seinai dialects and the dialects of the neighbouring south-western territories of Southern Aukštaitija. The study found that there were the same tendencies in the usage of loanwords in the Punskas and Seinai region as well as in the neighbouring south-western territories of Southern Aukštaitija: 1) due to close connections with the Slavic languages, most of the loanwords are of Slavic origin, there are significantly fewer words from the German language (most of them came through the Slavic languages ), 2) the loanwords describing no longer existent reality die out, 3) there are numerous hybrid vocabulary items. Most of the loanwords are adjusted to the Lithuanian lexicon in accordance with the general laws of phonetics and morphology, adding the necessary suffix. In the Punskas and Seinai dialects as well as in the neighbouring Southern Aukštaitija dialects some of the loanwords sound Slavic, while other ones are changed and differ greatly from the original source. Most of the loanwords name household items, character features, physical and physiological activities, as well as abstract phenomena and things. [From the publication]
