ENThe Lithuanian emigre artist Romas Viesulas, who always returned to past times in his work, expressed the dramatic experiences of his generation through his individual artistic perspective and modern form. The Viesulas archive donated to the Lithuanian Art Museum in 2015-2017 by the artists family offered new information and encouraged broadening the existing research, supplementing our knowledge of the artists life and creative panorama with both important, hitherto unknown facts, and also contextual material. The painful loss of his roots - his homeland, language and close family members - became an incentive for the artist’s expression and bursts of creative inspiration. The theme of loss is of great importance in Viesulas’ work. The "broadcasting" of his accumulated pain and the subjective existential experiences given meaning in his work carry the greatest weight and value: the longing for that which was lost, uneasiness over the fate o f his land and his future, the lost opportunities to return and see his close relatives. The article highlights the artist’s creative field, historic and subjective (experienced and recalled) time, and his creative relationship with the meanings he accentuated. Intense experiences, the bitter taste of great loss and diffused identity is encoded in the abstracted visions of Viesulas, where we recognise the complicated world of today. [From the publication]
