Summary / Abstract:

ENStanislaw Leszczyński (Stanislovas Leščinskis), who under the pressure from the Swedish side in 1704 was elected the King of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and his small entourage was for a while accompanying King Charles XII of Sweden and his army. At the beginning of January of 1708, Stanisław Leszczyński followed the Swedish army, which marched towards Russia, and left Kuyavia for the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In the middle of February, he was already in Grodno and later stayed in Gieranony for about a month. From there he left for Vilnius. The King was staying in the capital of Lithuania from the 22nd to the 29th of March. During his stay, the King had a tour of the city and is said to have grown fond of it. Later, until the middle of June, Stanisław Leszczyński resided in a small town called Soły, in the vicinity of Ashmyany. While there, on the 22nd of May, the King received an order from Charles XII to return to the Kingdom of Poland. On the 1st of July 1708 he was already in Grodno and later, crossing the Brandenburg lands in Prussia, arrived in Marienburg in the Kingdom of Poland and resided there until autumn. Although King Stanislaw visit to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania enforced his positions in Lithuanian lands, this, however, first and foremost was subject to the support of the Sapieha (Sapiega) family, whom Charles XII fully trusted. King Stanislovas’ attempt to lean upon the dukes Wiśniowiecki (Višnioveckis), who might have become a certain counterbalance to the Sapiega’s influence, bore no fruit. The visit to Lithuania was predetermined by Charles XII’s will. On the rare occasions of his meetings with the King of Sweden in Smarhon and Radashkovichy, Leszczyński was unable to persuade Charles XII to support his political conceptions of how to calm down the Commonwealth.Letters written by the sovereign’s secretaries S. K. Szwykowski and J. M. Karp (Karpis) suggest that King Stanisław entourage were sceptical of Charles XII’s political and military plans, criticized the behaviour of Swedish military forces in the territory of the Commonwealth, and viewed them more as enemies rather than allies.
