ENThe purpose of this article is to introduce the use of reconstruction models of book bindings as a method for improving the practical skills of document conservators. Lithuanian educational institutions offer the training for single-discipline specialists in repair and conservation of paintings, sculptures, mural paintings, archaeological finds and documents, as well as chemical technologists in the field of conservation and repair. The majority of these institutions do not have the necessary facilities, equipment, tools and materials to offer practical training, and the time of practical work during the studies is too short to build the necessary skills. Therefore, most of the graduates master the theoretical basis of conservation and repair, but lack practical skills and the know-how. Such specialists receive training at conservation workshops according to their current needs, profile (e.g. bookbinding) and capacities. Practice has shown that one of the best ways to improve conservators’ skills is working on reconstruction models. The article reviews the tendencies of historical and cultural development of the bookbinding craft from medieval workshops to the activities of contemporary reconstruction associations. The status of craftsman in the Vilnius Bookbinders’ Guild in the 16th century, in the late 19th and the early 20th century, the Soviet period and the period of independent Lithuania is briefly discussed. The understanding of reconstruction of bookbinding, and the concepts of reconstruction, replica, model and simulation are analysed. In the final section of the article, a model and reconstruction of a 15th century binding is presented as one of the examples of document conservation traineeship. [From the publication]
