ENThe author analyses the main trends in urban sociology, the influence of G. Simmel, О. Spengler, M. Weber and other sociologists to the formation on the object of urban sociology. The paper examines the historical development of the problems and ideas related to the urban sociological research in post-war Lithuania. The author reveals the main features and results, the scientific interests of research groups of such investigations. Sociological urban research appeared as a response to the demands of social and urban planning of the environment, and in order to facilitate improvement of social and economic development in the cities and regions of Lithuania. The revision of the construction policy, the formation of better cultural, ecological, technological conditions in the towns were the main concerns of sociological investigations in the soviet period. In independent Lithuania sociological research is more concentrated on the investigations of the way of life of the population, the reorganisation of the social structures, the relationship between the different ethnic groups, social mobility, cultural attitudes and values, etc. In the paper the main methodological, organisational features and problems of sociological research in the cities and towns of Lithuania (Vilnius, Šiauliai, Marijampolė, Palanga, Neringa, Birštonas, Druskininkai) are analysed. The author emphasises the importance of the relationship between the results of research and social praxis. [From the publication]
