ENModernist literature in West Europe appeared as an opposition to an obsolete classical literary tradition. Artists modernists created new principles of content and from which absolutely broke off with the inherited aesthetic literary tradition. National literary tradition in the Baltic States came into existence only in the second half of the 19th century. There was no need to change this tradition into a newer one because it did not exist at all. Western modernists who had refused their literary traditions stimulated Baltic artists to believe in their creative potential and to write literary works based only on their creative talent, not using national literary traditions.
