ENFabijonas Kemėšis (1879-1954), a professor and a priest, distinguished himself in many fields of scientific and social work. He investigated economical, ideological, political, linguistic and other factors which determine the life of a nation, popularized cooperation, established co-operative organizations, published periodicals. For over 50 years F. Kemėšis engaged in theoretical and practical work aimed at cultivating the solidarity in the nation and strengthening the unity of the society. The activity of F. Kemėšis can be relatively divided into 4 periods: 1. 1911-1913 Participation in publishing the paper "Viltis" with the purpose of consolidating moderate intellectuals and looking for the points of interaction between the ideologies of Christian democrats and Social democrats; 2. 1925-1926 the efforts to, Unite the democratic forces working at strengthening the statehood of Lithuania and diminishing the discort between the government and opposition; 3. The 1930s. The attempts to reconcile the positions of the Lithuanian National Union and the Christian Democratic Party and to find the basis for their со-operation; 4. 1940-1945 the attempts to substantiate the principles of uniting of the nation in order to restore the independence. F. Kemėšis made a critical evaluation of the doctrines of capitalism and (especially) communism and put a lot of efforts to find the third way for the development of the society. He formulated his own credo of the political organisation of a state: the realization of democracy in political life; the realization of democracy in social life by means of trade unions; the cnsurance of ideological freedom in the society. He tried to achieve these goals through the merge into one whole of 3 ideals of national unification (religious, national and social). Many of polemical articles, written by F. Kemėšis, especially on politics, have not been published. The work at the main study "Towards the Christian Economics" was interrupted when the Soviet repressive structures arrested F. Kemėšis in 1946. The manuscripts of the other studies: "Lithuanians and Belorussians" and "The Evolution of social Thought and Institutions" were also confiscated during the arrest. Only small fragments have survived until today. F. Kemėšis died in Soviet prison accused of his creative work. But his immense creative heritage, particularly the manuscripts, have been barely studied. Therefore bringing back to life the works of F. Kemėšis from oblivion and revealing their place in the development of Lithuanian social political thought is vitally important. [From the publication]
