ENThe Lithuanian language users take a dual approach to the language maintenance or the language standardization. Some believe that the official language must be standardized and the established (codified) norms should be adhered to for public use whereas others advocate the complete liberty of the language use because they assume that everyone has the right to speak as is accustomed both in the private and public domain; linguists are seen as the language abusers hindering it from variation and creativity and obtruding an artificial dead language; there is no such thing as the standard language in reality, it is a myth. The paper follows the first approach. This approach is based on the instances of the language usage and is supported by the opinion of people who are not indifferent to the common public culture language and have a good command of the language. It is appropriate to debate on the necessity of the language maintenance rather than the existence of the common standard language or a need for its standardization. The linguistic community requires advice and recommendations instead of strict instructions on many language issues. The eligibility of specific linguistic means of expression in one or another sphere of linguistic communication calls for a debate. The paper relates the need to maintain the language to the relevant issues of the Lithuanian language teaching in a secondary school. [From the publication]
