ENThe article describes the situation of the Eastern Aukštaitian subdialect of Utena in the 21st century. In analysing dialectal peculiarities, the language of the middle-aged (between the ages 31 and 60) and the younger generation (under the age of 30) was mainly taken as the basis. The examples of the older generation, which is regarded as a representative of the traditional subdialect, are most often used in comparing dialectal facts. The material was collected between 2012 and 2015 from a large area of the subdialect of Utena (from 23 locations). The analysis showed that all the layers of the subdialect of Utena had a tendency towards a change in phonetics, morphology, word-formation, and syntax. Only the faintest features survive in phonetics, i.e. unstressed vowels o, ė are replaced with a, e and the unstressed diphthong ie is replaced with e; also, soft word-final consonants remain. Very open long vowels о and ė are especially clearly heard. Dative plural forms of the dual number and the old inflection of the masculine nouns and adjectives -ys are best preserved in morphology. The suffixes -okas and -otė are still used in word-formation. The object in the nominative case is still widely used in syntax. Hence, the traditional Eastern Aukštaitian subdialect of Utena tends to change. It merges into a considerably larger formation - the eastern regiolect of Eastern Aukštaitian with its centre in Utena. This regiolect does not only encompass the inhabitants of Utena but also the inhabitants of Anykščiai and Kupiškis. [From the publication]
