LTŠi knyga - tai folklorinio velnio pavadinimų, vartojamų įvairiose lietuvių tarmėse ir tautosakos tekstuose, sinchroninis tyrimas. ENThe present book analyzes the vocabulary of Lithuanian mythology from an ethnolinguistic perspective. This approach enables to explain and obtain further insight into the relationships between the language and the traditional ethnic culture. The main object of the research is the number of names of a popular Lithuanian folklore character, that is the devil, which are used in various Lithuanian dialects and in folklore texts (fairy tales, mythological legends, damnations, proverbs, incantations and traditional beliefs). The term "the name of the devil" (Lithuanian "velniavardžiai") is utilized further on in this book concerning the abovementioned vocabulary. The material for the analysis has been selected mainly from the following written sources: the dictionary of the Lithuanian language (LKŽ, volumes I-XX), Lithuanian dialect dictionaries and folklore collected articles. This research aims at analyzing Lithuanian names of the devil regarding the following aspects: 1) their functions; 2) derivation; 3) origin; 4) motivation. The monograph consists of ten chapters, conclusions, bibliography and sources, synopses in Russian and English, and an index of all the mythonyms. The ways the names of the devil are created are illustrated with the material presented by three tables; and twelve schemes will help the reader to understand better the issues of motivation, origin and functions of the vocabulary under analysis. The introductory chapter explains the general issues, it includes the theoretical literature review and review of the sources, it also analyzes the origin of the mythonym velinas (velnias). Moreover, this chapter discusses the status of this mythical creature in the system of the ancient Lithuanian religion. The following seven chapters deal with the motivated names of the devil that have not been borrowed.One chapter is devoted to the analysis of the borrowed names of the devil, these are Slavicisms and Germanisms. The proper names of the folklore devil are also discussed in the book: in most cases these are words of non-Lithuanian origin. Christian baptismal names are used most often to name the devil. [...] This edition is intended not only for ethnolinguists, but also for linguists that deal with dialectology, and primarily for those who study dialect vocabulary, as well as for lexicologists, lexicographers, and researchers of the language of folklore. It might also be useful for linguists interested in the issues of the history of the language with special interest in the processes of borrowing words, as well as for folklorists, researchers of the prose genres of folklore (fairy tales, bylinas), and finally for the specialists in paremiology. The book about various names of the devil which have different motivations may also be of interest to ethnologists, specialists in mythology and religious studies.
