ENThe historie region of Užnemunė lies in the south-western part of the Lithuanian Republic, to the west and south of the Neman River and was settled during the Middle Ages mostly by the Yatvings. Because the boundaries of their territory are still imperfectly understood the Yatving settlement has been studied within the geographic unit of Užnemunė. The present article reports on the results of the investigation of the hillforts found in this region made over the last forty years and sets out to evaluate the significance of these sites for understanding the Yatving tribes. In Užnemunė, hillfort sites arc the principal element of the Iron Age archaeological heritage of this territory; they have been studied more extensively than settlement sites which accompany them and the small number of cemeteries known from the same area. At the time of writing 123 hillforts have been recorded in Užnemunė. [Extract, p. 73]
