ENThis book, which describes objects of the urban heritage of the Samogitia region (including the Klaipėda region with the exception of the city of Klaipėda), is devoted to the history of the urban development of 19 towns and small towns listed from A to M (the second book contains 21 objects listed from N to Ž). The structure of the book is almost identical to that of the earlier published books of the same series which presented research material on objects of the urban heritage of a part of the Užnemunė region and Eastern Lithuania. One of the major differences lies in the fact that the book includes, without altering the final chronology, the earlier studies published by the author at different points of time, but later supplemented with new data and slightly revised. The book consists of two parts. The first part of the book, which is its main part, describes the objects which may be divided into 3 groups according to their rank in respect of the cultural heritage. Kėdainiai, which has the highest rank of a cultural monument, belongs to the first group. The second group is made up of 13 objects (Alsėdžiai, Batakiai, Čekiškė, Darbėnai, Eržvilkas, Ylakiai, Joniškis, Jurbarkas, Kražiai, Krekenava, Kretinga, Laukuva and Linkuva), which since 1969 had the status of a monument of the urban heritage of local significance and since 1994, in accordance with the scale of rating of cultural properties as provided for under the "Law on Protection of Immovable Cultural Properties", have been considered cultural objects of state significance. The third group is represented by 5 objects (Gruzdžiai, Kuršėnai, Luokė, Mažeikiai and Meškuičiai) which have not been included yet in the protection zone of objects of the urban heritage of Lithuania whose research was renewed in 1995.The second part of the book presents the cartographic and iconographic material of a lasting value related to objects of the urban heritage of the region whose history of the urban development has not been analysed by the author. This part of the book is made up of the plans and images of 31 towns and small towns dating back to the 18th - mid 20th century. The book is dominated by the studies of the history of the urban development of towns and small towns, which are presented in its first part. Their material is arranged in the chronological order; urban development is set against the background of historical factual data. The historical data consist of the demographic characteristics of objects (total number of population, its composition according to nationalities, religions, trades, etc., dynamics of development in time), information on the self-government of towns and trade privileges, economic activities (trade and crafts), architecture and date of the foundation, construction, reconstruction, etc. of various confessions" places of worship and educational and other institutions. In the absence of a sufficient amount of firsthand data on the development of the plan and volumetric and spatial composition of towns and small towns, the entire material has allowed to base, to various extent, hypotheses of the urban formation of separate objects. Use has also been made of the retrospective method and analogies of the development of other Lithuanian towns and small towns. [From the publication]
