ENThis monograph that belongs to the area of social sciences was created to achieve three aims. First, it was aimed to provide comprehensive and thorough analysis of the role of cultural centers and foreign Lithuanian cultural organizations in local communities. Second, the authors wanted to reveal the role of cultural centers in Lithuanian State and regional cultural politics. Third, it was determined to create a strong basis for further research on cultural centers’ activities, because the authors of this monograph believe that these cultural organizations are unique and highly significant in their activities for local residents and processes that are undergoing in the Lithuanian society. This monograph is created based on the data of three years pursued project “Educational and motivational aspects of cultural centers activities’ from the community mobilization perspective” (MIP-023/2012) that was obtained by conducting quantitative and qualitative research in the Lithuanian cultural centers in the border areas and Lithuanian cultural organizations abroad. The research was carried out during 20122013. After four years, the qualitative research was conducted again in 2018 at the same cultural centers and expanded by incorporating new cultural centers in Lithuania. This monograph aims to fill the gap that was formed in the scientific field, because there is still a lack of comprehensive and profound studies on the activities of cultural centers in Lithuania that would thoroughly assess their role in local communities. As an important part of the society that is integrated in the municipal structure or acting independently, it is still receiving only fragmentary attention of the researchers. Due to the changing Lithuanian society, the cultural centers are transforming as well, and the changes occur in their activities and management. Therefore, this collective scientific study aims to answer many raising questions: what is the role of cultural centers in the process of increasing soft security of the local communities; what needs of the local residents do the cultural centers satisfy with their activities and offered cultural products; by what means the national identity and cultural sensitivity are developed; how does the dissemination of national, popular, and high culture occur; in what ways the communication is developed, and what benefits it provides for the local residents; how the creation of educational spaces is managed and organized, and what place does the non-formal learning take in the context of cultural centers’ activities. The monograph thoroughly reviews many significant aspects of cultural centers’ activities. [...].Summing up the visible (direct) and invisible (indirect) impact of cultural centers on persons, communities, and countries, the economic, social, and cultural areas should be stressed. Lithuanian State and many directors of cultural centers still do not understand the impact of cultural centers’ activities on all three areas. It is possible that this monograph will be a good encouragement to review and rewrite Law on Centers for Culture, newly evaluate the role of cultural centers in the regional and cultural policy that is implemented by the State, and take care of Lithuanian communities on the border of Lithuania as well as worldwide. This monograph allowed to reveal the role of organizations that are very important for Lithuania, i.e., cultural centers, in various aspects and evaluate their input in the cultural dissemination of Lithuania as well as many other important areas of the country’s life. The monograph is devoted to the mentioned employees and volunteers of cultural organizations, creators of cultural politics, cultural managers, and those who are interested in cultural organizations and educational process that appear in them. It is as well important for those who study culture and art management and, finally, those who care about the development of local communities and are interested in social-cultural processes in modern Lithuanian society.
