ENLithuanian pewter studies are only in their infancy. Small amounts of remaining artifacts in museums can only suggest that pewter was only used for ecclesiastical purposes and cannot show the importance of pewter production for secular households. However, handwritten sources show different situation. The main objective of this article is to look at pewter production used in secular environment analyzing handwritten sources from the 17th till the 19th centuries. The first task is to study terminology which describes different types of alloys and household utensils. The second task is to analyze the abundance and the usage of pewter production in secular environment. The analysis shows that the authors of registries knew different kinds of tin alloys and usually separated items while pricing them. Utensils are described in different terms. However, in relation to changing eating habits new items and terms emerge in the 18 century. Pewter was commonly used in every social class of gentry and town-dwellers especially for making dishes and cutlery. Almost every registry mentions used pewter items, which is one of the main materials used in making household utensils. [From the publication]
