ENThe article presents the diversity of visual forms and meanings of a garden in the Lithuanian theatre dramaturgy and performances of different genres and stylistics produced from the 17th to the early 21st century – the concepts of a garden as a place of action and as a symbol or metaphor, its transformations and development. The opera productions in the Vilnius Lower Castle in 1636 and 1648, and productions of private theatres of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania that operated in the middle of the 18th century are analyzed, and some productions of the City Theatre from the 19th century are discussed. The traditions of representing a garden in the Lithuanian theatre vary according to the historical period; its forms are sometimes stricter and sometimes more flexible, and the meanings of a garden are applied both intuitively and with premeditation, trying to find and highlight the tension between different spaces. The motive of a garden is sometimes used in a decorative and, occasionally, conceptual way. A garden in the theatre is not only the backdrop for the action or a meeting point of the characters; depending on the genre of the production, it can be a place where one meets temptations or surrenders to them or, on the contrary, where one dreams and meditates on a pure spiritual connection. The twentiethcentury theatre is represented in the article by a production of The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov, showing the conceptual approach of contemporary theatre directors and set designers to the garden theme.
