ENDuring the first four decades of the 20th century the ancient village system in Lithuania was transformed into a separated farm system. Grovving individualism of farmers was accompanied by increasing political polarization. However, at the šame time the process of formation of co-operative relations among the farmers started and the efforts for fostering their unity increased. The main organization of the Lithuanian farmers which played an important role in the development of farmers' solidarity, was "Ūkininkų vienybė" ("The Farmers' Unity"). It was functioning from 1927 to 1936. The leader of this organization was the famous Lithuanian agriculturist Jonas Aleksa (1879-1955). "The Farmers' Unity" aimed at propagating the significance of farming in the Lithuanian society, and improved the culture of farming. Its positive experience can be used by contemporary agricultural organizations of Lithuania. [From the publication]
