ENIllustrations of two alternative world's of social geography textbooks for the tenth form (the old one-Geography: World's Social Geography: textbook for the 10th form by Vaitiekūnas S., issued in 1995, and the new one - World's Social Geography: textbook for the 10th form by Šalna R., Baubinas R., Padriezas V., Tuskiene V., issued in 1999) were compared. The results of analysis showed that partiality according to gender aspect remains. This partiality is expressed by stereotyping traditional gender roles, by invisibility and inadequacy of the female gender, i.e. by presenting information that is positive to a man. The research revealed a lot of problems: earlier illustrations have not been discussed according to gender aspects and because of that we could not properly foresee and determinate the influence of some illustrations: a) showing people with masks; b) caricatures where a hero is usually male; c) non-colorful documental photos almost always show male persons in social life; d) texts that do not correspond the view. These problems demand further investigations, the involvement of expert groups (gender scientists' and teachers' attitude may differ) in oder to avoid subjectivity in this work. The comparison of the two textbooks' illustrations may show the advantages of the newer textbook. The changes which have taken place in society in the last five years are already reflected in this textbook: new myths were created ("woman - an equal partner" and "man - a father"), the masculine way of ruling the world was spoken ironically through caricatures. The methodology of illustrations analysis used in educological research is broadened, improved by bringing more evaluation criterions. [From the publication]
