LTLietuvos akademinės bibliotekos iš esmės menkai dalyvauja studijų procese, ugdydamos akademinės bendruomenės (studentų, pedagoginio personalo, administracijos darbuotojų ir kt.) informacinį raštingumą. Iki šiol Lietuvos bibliotekos neturi bendros ir efektyvios teikiamų informacinių paslaugų sistemos ir nėra išnaudojamos kaip infrastruktūrinė ir informacinė bazė studijų procesui optimizuoti. Atsiranda poreikis analizuoti užsienio šalių patirtį, nes daugelio Vakarų šalių akademinės bibliotekos dėl objektyvių istorinių priežasčių turėjo geresnes edukacinių paslaugų plėtros galimybes, rėmėsi įvairesnėmis jų integracijos į studijų procesą metodikomis. Pagrindinis leidinio tikslas - apibūdinti tas strategijas, kuriomis akademinė biblioteka vadovaujasi optimizuodama studijų procesą, aprūpindama jį informacija ir kurdama naujas mokymosi aplinkas. Leidinyje pateikiama šiuolaikinės akademinės bibliotekos samprata, atskleidžiama vartotojų, paslaugų ir funkcijų specifika, analizuojama JAV, Vakarų Europos ir Skandinavijos šalių akademinių bibliotekų, sėkmingai dalyvaujančių studijų procese, patirtis ugdant informacinius akademinės bendruomenės gebėjimus, atskleidžiami patirties dėsningumai, skirtumai ir panašumai bei apžvelgiami šiuolaikinės akademinės bibliotekos veiklos prioritetai. Rengiant šį darbą buvo remtasi įvairių literatūros ir interneto šaltinių, bibliotekų tinklalapių analizės, pusiau struktūruoto interviu metodais. ENThe study was prepared as implementation of EU Phare project “BIBLIONOVA: Devising and Adopting the Method of Developing Information Abilities and Skills of Self-Sufficient Studying in the Region,, (contract NO. ESF/2004/2.4.0-K01-161/SUT-247). During the last decade Lithuanian academic libraries not only increased but also considerably changed their activities. They have developed their functions and established new principal objectives to be solved only for the library that shapes a modem world outlook and thinking, the standard and value-based systems and activity stereotypes conforming to the most dynamic challenges of the world. An imperative of the modern academic library includes active and professional participation in the processes of learning and further studying. It should be stressed that the current educational possibilities of Lithuanian academic libraries are not fully considered. Along the adaptation of Lithuanian universities to the modified environment, the academic library is supposed to be an effective factor determining the process. Furthermore, the academic library is a powerful member of information literacy education. In the event of creating modern flexible teaching and learning environments in order to develop the abilities of information search, evaluation and use, a library’s role is out of a discussion.Moreover, it is to be regretted that a topic dealing with information literacy was started to be discussed only a few years ago: the issues of information literacy education at school level in their articles are examined by D. Urbonaitė (2000), V. Mozūraitė (2000, 2001), at academic level - by G. Duobinienė, G. Tautkevičienė (2001), D. Janavičienė (1999, 2001), A. Glosienė, A. Krivienė (2005). Nevertheless, the academic institutions and its libraries are still missing a clearly focused strategy for integrating information literacy and for active libraries participation into the process of studies. To promote information literacy of the academic community (learners, teachers administration staff etc.), Lithuanian academic libraries are poorly presented into the process of studies. Lithuanian libraries still lack an integrated and effective system providing information services (for example, information desks, expert offices etc.) and are not utilized as an infrastructure and information base for optimization of the process of studies. A need to analyze experience of the foreign academic libraries in this field demonstrates that due to the outer or historical reasons, the academic libraries of the Western countries had better opportunities of expanding educational services and stronger chances of integrating them into the process of studies.The publication practices the techniques employing assessment of the resources of literature and the Internet, statistical data and the web sites of libraries as well as the methods of a half- structured interview. Chapter one revises a conception of the academic library and discloses the specificity of consumers and functions as well as points to the purposes determining a required alteration in libraries activity. On the basis of the surveyed data gathered by the experts of the US, European and Scandinavian academic libraries, chapter two discusses the tendencies of experience gained by the foreign libraries successfully participating in the process of studies and presents an assessment of the Lithuanian academic library situation from the point of view of international experience. Chapter three introduces the outlooks of the academic libraries in the context of the new alterations. Summarizing experience and providences of the foreign and Lithuanian academic libraries, conclusions are drawn and recommendations on ensuring prosperous academic libraries participation in the process of studies are put forward in the end of the publication.
