ENSustainable development is the main goal of human development and the mainstream policy of global governments. Sustainability is becoming more important in terms of transparency, completeness, integrity and insightful decision-making. There is a lot of uncertainty in the world now, with various threats to the sustainable development of mankind. It is very important to change production and consumption habits and lifestyles when looking for fundamental solutions to reduce emerging threats and risks. Changes must comply with the principles of sustainable development. For this purpose, it is necessary to develop models and tools for assessing sustainability in different fields and on various levels: both at the macro and at micro level. Many scientists have been exploring issues related to the selection and use of sustainable development indicators. In addition, much attention has been devoted to the methodologies used to select qualitative and quantitative indicators that combine all three dimensions of sustainable development. The purpose of this monograph is to examine and systematize the methods and tools for the assessment of sustainability, and to present their application in different branches of economy at various levels. The main objectives to achieve this purpose are: to form theoretical bases for the assessment of sustainability and to study practical solutions for sustainability assessment and their application possibilities in various economic sectors at various levels. The structure of the monograph reflects the consistent disclosure of the objectives set. The book consists from two parts: theoretical and practical. The first part of the monograph presents the main theoretical aspects of sustainability assessment and sustainability appraisal, including the main issues of the sustainable development paradigm, the analysis of sustainable development goals and tasks, the study of the links between globalization and sustainable development, the theoretical substantiation of the application of sustainable development models, systems and multi-criteria assessment methods and general equilibrium models. Monographs sections 1.3 and 1.4 have been prepared on the basis of the author’s Asta Mikalauskienė and Dalia Štreimikienė teaching material “Theoretical Foundations for the Implementation of Sustainable Development Policy”. The second part of the monograph provides insights and practical examples and recommendations for the assessment of sustainability at the macro tainable economic development are discussed: energy, industry, agriculture, tourism. In the chapter dealing with the theoretical aspects of sustainability, the monograph presents comprehensive overview of sustainability concept development, discusses sustainability dimensions, sustainability assessment approaches, tools and methods and their application challenges.
