ENIn the summer of 1941, after Alytus had been occupied by the units of the German Army, the Jewish people were shot dead in Vidzgiris forest and buried in common graves. This forest has become an eternal resting place not only for the Jewish in Alytus town, but also for the Jewish from around towns. The Monument Obelisk was built in June 1959 in commemoration of them. In the Soviet-era periodicals, encyclopaedias, propaganda literature, as well as in the historical literature, press and the Internet media of the Independent Lithuania (after 1990), it was persistently stated that about 60.000 Jews, including 2.000 Jews from Alytus were buried during the years of the Nazi occupation in the places of mass homicide in Vidzgiris forest. This terrible number is imposed on us in many Holocaust research reports, studies, and books. The Soviet-era activists did not only confound in the number toils of victims of the genocide in Alytus region (2.229 – 2.231 – 2.600 – 2.800 – 3.834 – 7.000 – 10.000 – 11.000 – 13.000 – 15.000 – 18.200 – 30.000 – 60.000) and falsified historical facts, but their "legacy" misled many historians of the independent Lithuania, encyclopaedia and directory compilers, researchers, journalists, guides, and many other people. In 2016 the author of these lines sent a petition to the Lithuanian Centre for the Study of Genocide and Resistance and the Museum of Alytus Regional Studies on the Genocide of the Jews in Alytus in the autumn of 1941. The analysis of the research carried out by the historian Dr. Arūnas Bubnys reveals that at least 2.229 Jews were murdered in Alytus, and around 7.300 Jews throughout the whole Alytus County. It is more than obvious that the number of 60.000 is politicized, artificially exaggerated, i.e. it is unreasonable and just a tale. [From the publication]
