ENThe works of the famous Lithuanian painter, composer and symbolist Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875-1911) were undoubtedly influenced by his acquaintance with nature of the Caucasus. He travelled and photographed the Caucasus Mountains and the Black Sea; many of his paintings have motifs associated with mountain and sea views. Metaphors of spatiality, mountains and images of heights in his paintings have been widely examined but his verbal creativity is less known, though some scientists draw attention to imagery, plasticity and musicality of Čiurlionisʼs written texts (Vytautas Landsbergis writes: “Čiurlionis in his writings sees plasticity but forms the shape in accordance with music”). Musicality, compositional principles and synaesthesia resolution techniques in Čiurlionisʼs “Laiškai Devdorakėliui” [Letters to Devdorakelis] will be analyzed in this article. Research will refer to the works of Werner Wolf, Hermann Erpf, Viktor Bobrovsky, Salomėja Jastrumskytė, Vytautas Landsbergis, Jonas Bruveris, Nida Gaidauskienė and others and will use a comparative methodology.
