ENIn 1930-1940 the Twenty Seven Book Lovers’ Society was established and functioned in Kaunas. It developed artistic book publishing, united artists, organized book exhibitions and competitions. The society was initiated by V. Steponaitis, P. Galaunė, M. Urbšienė, J. Tumas-Vaižgantas, V. Cimkauskas, J. Paknys, V. and M. Biržiška, V. Burkevičius, K Bizauskas, A. Rucevičius and other persons. In 1937 the society presented their publications for the World Exhibition m Paris. A Lithuanian folk tale ‘The Swan, Spouse of the King” illustrated by V. Petravičius was awarded Grand Prix, M. Bulaka’s woodcuts for the “Sad Tale” by J. Biliūnas won the Gold Medal. Later the society presented their books in other exhibitions as well: the Lithuanian autumn Exhibition, 1937; the Exhibition of Press and Photography of the Baltic States in Czechoslosvakia, etc. Activities of the Twenty Seven Book Lovers’ Society made a profound influence on Lithuanian culture, became a part of the history of museology. The largest part of the items is at the M.K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art, at the departments of Graphic Art, Numismatics, Applied Art, the library and the A. and P. Galaunė house and museum.
