ENThe article deals with issues related to foreign travels of young magnates in order to supplement their national education. The pretext for these considerations are events related to the figure of the Lithuanian prince Janusz Radziwiłł, who during his many-year foreign trip undertook studies at numerous European universities, in particular at the Protestant academy in Leiden. It was during his stay in this town that a crime was committed by one of the prince’s servants, which resulted in adjudicating the death sentence for the culprit. However, the consequences of this event were widely heard throughout the Netherlands, as well as Europe due to the sharp reaction of the Lithuanian prince, who could not come to terms with the verdict of the university tribunal. His insistent protest against the university authorities, however, turned out to be pointless and exposed the young prince to the additional loss of honour. For the academy in Leiden it was the first such event in the history of the university and caused it a great deal of trouble – to such an extent that the Dutch central authorities became involved in the whole matter. The peregrination of Prince Janusz perfectly illustrates the character and mentality of the more affluent part of the Polish and Lithuanian nobility, and their attitude towards education. In addition, the article exposes some mental diff erences between representatives of the noblemen of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the burghers of Republic of the Seven United Provinces, along with the apparent educational ideals of the Polish and Lithuanian magnates.
