ENThe derivational meaning of Lithuanian proper nouns - place names and personal names - is analysed in this article. The derivational system of proper nouns has some specific features: all proper nouns are derivatives, there are two specific derivational ways for proper nouns - primary proper nouns and compound proper nouns; two derivational levels called onimization and transonimization are typical for proper nouns. According to the derivational meaning, proper nouns may be divided into two groups: 1) proper nouns with zero derivational meaning (i.e. primary place names, surnames coming from hystorical personal names, old baltic names coming from hystorical personal names, new Lithuanian names coming from appellatives, primary nicknames) and 2) proper nouns with expressed derivational meaning (i.e. secondary place names, official and unofficial surnames of women and unofficial surnames of men, secondary new Lithuanian names of women and men, nicknames coming from proper words). According to the expressed derivational meaning, there were noticed several semantic groups of proper nouns. Semantic groups of place names are these: place names in meaning of dependence, quality, place, diminutivic, collective place names. Semantic groups of surnames are female surnames and male surnames. Female names and male names are semantic groups of names. Semantic groups of nicknames are such: nicknames in meaning of quality, family, nominal nicknames. The derivational meaning of Lithuanian proper nouns isn't researched thoroughly but there is several linguistic studies of diminutivic place names (J. Senkus, L. Bilkis). [From the publication]
