ENIn the context of the cooperation between Latvia and Lithuania, translation of fiction by Latvian authors into the Lithuanian language was selected to be the object of the research. In a period from 1990 to 2007, 45 books were published; prose is predominant among these works (3 collections of poetry were published.) Recently, the number of translations starts increasing; moreover, the tendency for translation of new, recently written works by Latvian authors (Laima Muktupāvela, Nora Ikstena, Inga Abele, Mā Rungulis, Juris Rubenis, etc.) is observed. Sometimes, translations into lithuanian are published together with texts in the original language ( collections of poetry by Uldis Bērzinš, Knuts Skujenieks).- Collections are issued encompassing pieces of two genres. The only translated drama - MARGARITA by Mara Zalite - was staged at Panevėžys Drama Theatre in 2004. The main criterion in selection of fiction works to be translated is neither the age of writers nor their gender; relevance of the theme, popularity of the work or other criteria are more important.[...] Analysis of translations from the linguistic point of view allows raising several questions which are important in further publishing of translated books. The books issued within the period mentioned, first of all, raise the question concerning spelling the names and surnames of the relevant authors (whether they can be written in the original, i. e. Latvian, language or they should be Lithuanianised like it is still being done with Latvian personal names); also, it concerns titles of fiction works (whether the author's variant should be followed or the translator is free to choose and suggest other ones). The question of the linguistic quality of translation is very important, too.
