Local expressions of piety in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania at the turn of fifteenth and sixteenth centuries : the case of the Iljiničiai [Illinich] family and Zelva Magna

Nors laikui bėgant Iljiničiai ir patys įsteigė naujų - „savųjų“ Lucko bei Vilniaus vyskupijų bažnyčių bei altorių, tačiau pradžioje buvo aiškiai matomas jų polinkis remti sutuoktinių šeimos fundacijas - Daugirdų Lentupio, Načkaičių Didžiosios Želvos parapijas. Dėmesys kreipiamas į XV-XVI a. sandūroje populiarėjusius Dievo Motinos, Rūpintojėlio, šv. ENThe origins of the Iljiničius family, like those of many Lithuanian nobles, remain shrouded in mystery. S. A. Rybchonak concludes that its nominal progenitor, Ilia, was a member of the Orthodox Ruthenian gentry who owned an estate at Studzenka in Volhynia during the first half of the fifteenth century. It is probable that his son Ivaška (Jonas) Iljiničius, a member of the retinue of Grand Duke Casimir, was also baptised into the Eastern Orthodox Christian faith at birth but converted to Roman Catholicism on marriage to his second wife, an unknown Kęsgailaitė. The aim of this paper is to examine how Iljiničius Catholic piety in particular is typical of trends in the wider Grand Duchy of Lithuania at the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The convert Iljiničius family at first supported Catholic churches founded by the families of spouses (the Daugirdai, Načkaičiai) rather than establishing a Catholic church in Pauberag, and marriage graces obtained by Mikalojus and Jurgis Jonaičiai (de Polbrzek) illustrate connections with leading Lithuanian gentry families stretching back at least three generations to the days of Vytautas. The case of the Iljiničius parish at Zelva reveals a sophisticated and multi-generational exploitation of liturgical patronage, spiritual fashion and organisation far from major centres which reflects developments elsewhere in the dioceses of Vilnius and Lutsk. In the case of Ona Načkaitytė Iljiničienė’s Zelvan almshouse, such developments could be decidedly innovative in the context of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. [From the publication]
