ENLithuania is struggling with its past. After the signing of the Hitler-Stalin Pact, the Soviet Union occupied the country, and in 1941, Hitler's Germany followed. When the Red Army returned in 1944, thousands of Lithuanians joined the partisan resistance. One of the leading figures of the movement was Adolfas Ramanauskas. At the end of 2017, the publicist Rūta Vanagaitė claimed that Ramanauskas might have been involved in the murder of Jews and that he had also collaborated with the NKVD. Both claims are untenable.
