ENReferring to the principles of comparative methodology and comparative analysis of concrete works of art this lecture gives analysis of ideological and formal links of the mature painting of Čiurlionis with abstract, metaphysical and surrealist painting. By 1906-1907, Čiurlionis had already painted pictures abstract, while W. Kandinsky, P. Klee, F. Kupka and others did it in 1910-1914. The main attention is devoted to comparative analysis of works of Čiurlionis and „metaphysical painting“ de G. De Chirico. In Čiurlionis pictures visual structures unfold in a panoramic space. Priority is given the spontaneity development of themes. Pictures are composed horizontally or vertically, organizing rhythmical visual structures. Flexible musical lines, decorative, dynamically recurring abstract arabesque forms, acceleration and slowdown of rhythm become of great importance here. Despite the artist’s inclination to the consistent development of images, Čiurlionis’ pictures contain hints of metaphysical allusion. Čiurlionis was a precursor of twentieth - century abstraction, surrealist and metaphysical paint and as such he was important in the currents of modernist movements. [From the publication]
