ENThe use of terms in several branches of activities and their inclusion in special branch dictionaries is attracting attention of terminologists and branch experts but the matter of location of applied terms in common language dictionaries is not less important: term selection, choice of references, addition of synonyms etc. From this viewpoint, valuable material has been presented in bilingual dictionaries. The totality of Latvian and Lithuanian terms to be used in spheres of social life, especially in applied communication, has been examined under contrastive aspect. It was included in both current dictionaries (although not equally regarding their volume), the "Latvian-Lithuanian Dictionary", and the "Lithuanian-Latvian Dictionary". Terms provided with related branch references and their corresponding words have been compared, in particular in economy, bookkeeping, and law.Terms have been reflected in both dictionaries by use of common lexicographic principles: as separate headwords or specific word combinations under a headword, less frequently - under an adjectival or related verbal headword. Quite often terms undoubtedly belonging to the applied sphere terminology appear without any branch reference. Regarding their origin, many Latvian and Lithuanian applied terms are international, but frequently an international term corresponds to a native term in one of the language. Besides, hybrid terms consisting of an international root and native affixes are spread in both languages. Material examination proves that Latvian and Lithuanian applied terms have been included in the dictionaries upon analogous principles but nevertheless there are certain differences in term selection and their presentation. The terminological material of the respective bilingual dictionaries may be classified also according to other principles, e. g. term semantics or their derivation patterns. [From the publication]
