ENThe year 2002 will mark the 30th anniversary of the Chronicle of the Catholic Church in Lithuania. This underground publication played an important role in the 50 years of occupation of the Lithuanian nation. Its importance was most likely equal to that of the armed resistance of 1944-1953. The Chronicle was produced in Lithuania and in the free world, distributed in many countries of the world and the news reported by it was broadcast to Lithuania and the world. It united Lithuanians living on both sides of the Iron Curtain for whom the words GOD and MOTHERLAND were sacred. By disclosing the repressions committed against the faithful of Lithuania in the Soviet Union it joined the humanity’s fight for human rights and freedoms. This fight was the main reason why the name of Lithuania, this small country unbroken by the occupants, became famous throughout the world. Other fighters draw courage from the example set by it. Here in Lithuania the Chronicle was the source of strength for the Church in its fight. It disciplined collaborators or those who lacked courage. It helped Church hierarchs to develop their staying power. The year 2002 will mark the 30th anniversary of the Chronicle of the Catholic Church in Lithuania.
