ENThe use of proverbs and sayings by the foreign language teachers contributes to a better acquisition of this subject, expands the knowledge of the language, the range of vocabulary and features of its functioning, helps the learners in an informal entertaining way to work out the pronunciation of single sounds. Besides proverbs and sayings represent a source of knowledge of the country, because they reflect the information about the culture of the country, the most important moments in the history, traditions, customs and habits of the people who speak a certain language. Such knowledge is relevant in the contemporary dialogue of cultures. The paper presents the methods and results of studies on the use of Lithuanian and English proverbs that reflect the national character, at English lessons for students at Siauliai University, Lithuania. A purposeful use of English and Lithuanian proverbs and sayings in the English language classes has significantly broadened the diversity and extent of studentsí knowledge related to the English national character, approach to life traits, enriched the studentsí vocabulary and developed their communicative competence.
