ENŠateikiai manor is located near Šateikiai township in Plungė district. Established as the manor centre where the landlords and the keepers, who built dwelling and farm buildings, developed the park, were constantly creating a rather large, but modest ensemble of wooden architecture, lived. The wooden mansion on a high masonry plinth stands out by its size. There is a corridor surrounded by a masonry wall in the middle of the wooden building and two large smoke rooms still exist in the wide and spacious attic just above it. This article aims to present a rather complicated picture of the evolution and change of the mansion based on the historical data that has been collected since the 8th decade of the 20th century and the architectural investigation of 2017. While searching for an answer when the oldest mansion building of the described structure was built it should be noted that in 1692 the dwelling house was “new, on a masonry foundation ” and there were “2 chimneys on the roof". While investigating the first floor masonries the remains of kitchens, smoke rooms or similar masonries were found in two places. The chimney rooms or the smoke rooms with the chimneys rising above them were integrated at more or less equal distances both from the longitudinal and the transverse symmetry axis of the original contour of the mansion. The wooden mansion was built on a high masonry foundation, the building was of the same width as it is now, only shorter; the ground floor was built from field stones bound by highly calcareous and coarse mortar.[...].One of the main goals of the works carried out at the end of 19th c. - beginning of the 20th c. was to move the kitchen, the smoke room or other facilities of similar household purpose from the centre of the mansion or separate them better from the dwelling and representative premises. The smoke rooms were set in the same places, but in the attic, on the supporting arcs dividing the corridor vault and on the side walls of the former kitchens. From that time they became solely smoke rooms with entrances from the attic. The vaults over the first floor corridor are only in these areas. Not wide, but convenient stairs located near the first floor corridor lead to the wide and spacious attic. Smoke to the smoke rooms came from the mansion furnaces in the first floor. Such architectural solution has not been met anywhere else yet. During this period the windows obtained the division recorded in 1970. In the 8th decade of the 20th century the wooden part of the mansion was demolished, new and already masonry walls and partitions were built instead of the wooden ones. The walls from the outside were covered in boards to reproduce the view that existed before the reconstruction. The floor was installed from the prefabricated reinforced concrete slabs. In 2017 the spiral wheel of the history of Šateikiai manor mansion improvement works turned around - the building to be saved needs major repairs again. The constructor is UAB Plungės Dama. The roof coating has already been changed, it is planned to install new windows. The architectural investigations should be continued during the improvement works when semi-cement plaster is removed from the first floor walls and vaults as well as during the preparation for the exposition of the old masonry, fragments of floors or architectural elements of various periods, etc. These works will be carried out in 2018 or even 2019. The text was written before the archaeological or geological investigations are performed in various places of the building and surroundings. The investigation and improvement works of Šateikiai manor mansion continue, therefore knowledge on the building is not final; it may still reveal new data that would supplement or correct the evolution of the mansion architecture.
