ENThe article analyses the lexicon of the Lithuanian dialects from Punskas and Seinai: diminutives, phraseologies, vivid words and expressions, synonyms, comparisons, words used in the figurative sense, curses, exclamations, and onomatopoeias. The diminutives, words used in the figurative sense, comparisons, and phraseologies are the most encountered in the recorded and written sources, while vivid expressions and curses are rarely used. The aim of the article is not only to describe the vivid lexicon of Lithuanians living in Poland, but also to identify similarities and differences of the lexicon with the investigated neighbouring dialects of Aukštaitija. The collected material shows that the narratives of Dzūkai from the Seinai region and other areas of southern Aukštaitija are interesting and suggestive primarily because of the vivid language, conveying the attitude of the narrators, their view of the described event and the people. The vivid lexicon not only animates and narrates the story, but also reveals the worldview of its users. The lexicon is characterized by expressiveness, emotionality, dynamism and evaluation (admiration, pride, contempt, disdain, etc.). Vivid lexicon brings the language to life, making it more visually appealing, lively and interesting. The analysis of the stylistic means of expression described in the article helps to understand Antanas Baranauskas’ delight over the dialect of Dzūkai. The bishop liked the dialect so much that while visiting Krosna in 1899, he declared to the priests: “After the abolition of the Lithuanian press ban, I will immediately set up the Dzūkai newspaper and make efforts to make the dialect of Dzūkai rise above the other Lithuanian dialects”.
