Summary / Abstract:

ENGirionys Park, located in Kaunas District, was founded in 1960 under the project of one of the most famous Lithuanian landscape architects of that time. A picturesque place on the left bank of the Kaunas lagoon has been chosen for the famous Dendrological Park. The park's territory is ravaged by deep pockets, valleys with well-formed hills and ridges, which are about 30 meters deep. The diversity of geoforms and adjacent geological values (exposed banks of the Kaunas lagoon, sufosic circuses, fragments of the Pakalniškiai spring sinters) give the area an exceptional value and create favorable conditions for recreational, cognitive and educational activities. The Dendrological Park covers an area of 104.45 hectares. If the Raguoliai Pine Forest is also counted, the total park area is estimated at 250 ha. Currently, there are as many as 255 species and forms of trees and shrubs growing in the prak, which is why it is abundantly visited by students, landscape garden designers and amateurs. The landscape park is trenched by free-form trails and water bodies. The tracts are mainly grown from native tree species according to the unanimity principle described by A. Tauras. Prevailing are stands of Norway spruce, Scots pine, Silver birch and even red oak. Medium (up to 20 trees) and large (more than 20 trees) groups (birch, spruce, pine, oak, larch) are usually accompanying. There are also homogeneous ones, occasionally admixed with alongside designed solitaires. This helps to avoid the variegation of colors and textures. The park is used in various ways: as a polygon for work, research and study of forestry specialists, as the location of recreational and cultural events of residents of the surrounding settlements and Kaunas city, as the basis (for practical work and theoretical training) of the Kaunas Forestry and Environmental Engineering University of Applied Sciences), as the place of tourist and cognitive routes of the Kauno Marių Regional Park Directorate. The park's territory could be distinguished based on activities which include education, arts and culture, recreation and community development. On July 7, 2007, the park was declared a state-protected natural heritage site. [From the publication]
