ENSince the December coup in 1926 in Lithuania started the governments of a single political line – the nationalists, called the Tautininkai. The tremendous impact on this movement had the leader of the Lithuanian Nationalist Union and the president of Lithuania since December 1926 – Antanas Smetona. Along with taking over power the nationalists simultaneously began strengthening the “worship of the leader” in the society. The government monopolized by the nationalists also paid huge attention to the foreign policy. Initially it was aimed at strengthening the role of the country in the region by seeking support in Latvia and Estonia while maintaining the stable relations with Germany and the USSR. The most difficult question remained relations with Poland which were strongly affecting the authority of the government and thus maintenance of internal stability. Smetona’s policy from 1927 to 1939 experienced a certain evolution from idealizing the Lithuanian political position in the region during 1927-34, to the political realism manifested in concession to Poland, the Third Reich and the USSR, aimed at preserving the state’s independence.
