ENThe article gives an analysis of the search for the genesis of a family settled at the end of the sixteenth century in Samogitia, undertaken in the second half of the eighteenth century by Jakub Ignacy Nagórski. First, the armorial by Kasper Niesiecki, edited 1740, has been examined. Later, a chronicle, written down between the mid-seventeenth and the early eighteenth century, of a family of the same name has been found, a family bearing the coat of arms Leszczyc, based in Poland, in the Łęczyca district. Th e second stage was fi nding and examining the archive of the Samogitian family Nagórski. Taking the Polish chronicle as an example, a chronicle for the Nagórski family from Samogitia, bearing the Pobóg coat of arms, has been written down and later served as basis for diagrams and family trees. Finally, the initiator of the search limited himself to the collected data about his Samogitian family and the chronicle of the family of the same name. Disregarding obvious genealogical discrepancies, the chamberlain (podkomorzy) of Samogitia basing on these two diverse sources constructed a version of his family’s lineage presenting as his ancestor Jakub, believed to have come to Samogitia from the Łęczyca district. Th is version was convenient for the initia tor of the search – Jakub Ignacy Nagórski. Th e Nagórski family from Poland, bearing the Leszczyc coat of arms, belonged in the sixteenth century to the elites of the Łęczyca district, and so seemed attractive and could raise the prestige of the Samogitian counterpart. On the other hand, having chosen Jakub for his ancestor, the chamberlain of Samogitia – taking advantage of his infl uence and status – made many eff orts to immortalise in the family’s genealogical consciousness not only the ancestor bearing his name, but also himself.
