ENAttitudes on the transmission and teaching of folk singing in the contemporary urban folklore groups are discussed. Several East-European ethnomusicologists-teachers of folk singing were interviewed and their answers were generalized. The conclusion can be drawn that special attention is paid to vocal technique. The respondents agreed that vocal technique is equivalent element of vocal tradition and it should be transmitted as well as melody and lyrics, provided the professionalism is aimed. Opinion of the only “natural” voice is criticized, and possibility to learn different and, at the same moment, “natural” vocal techniques is argued instead. Traditional vocal aesthetics, ways of improvisation, singing in group, need of warming-up, and other issues on vocal training are discussed. [From the publication]
